This special issue in Small Business Economics investigates how entrepreneurs develop and leverage internal capabilities to succeed when external support systems are unavailable or depleted. Rather than viewing crises as isolated incidents, the issue recognizes that contemporary entrepreneurs increasingly operate under persistent adversity and must rely on their own resources, psychological strengths, and adaptive mechanisms to thrive.

The call seeks innovative research that moves beyond existing literature by examining the endogenous foundations of entrepreneurial success. Submissions should explore how entrepreneurs generate innovation, build resilience, and maintain adaptability when facing continuous challenges and reduced access to traditional ecosystem support.

This special issue addresses entrepreneurial ecosystems in emerging economies, where new ventures face distinctive obstacles including institutional weakness, high uncertainty, and limited market access. While research on entrepreneurial ecosystems has expanded significantly, most studies focus on developed nations, leaving a knowledge gap about how these ecosystems function in the Global South and other emerging regions.

The call welcomes research that balances Global North and Global South perspectives, examines ecosystem emergence and development over time, applies systems thinking, and investigates how digitalization shapes entrepreneurial activity in resource-constrained contexts. Contributors are encouraged to explore how entrepreneurial ecosystems address institutional voids, support different types of entrepreneurs, and contribute to sustainable development goals.

While quantitative, positivist approaches have traditionally dominated entrepreneurship research, they often fail to capture the lived experiences of marginalized entrepreneurs who remain underrepresented in scholarship despite their significant contributions to local economies. Qualitative research is better suited to exploring the meanings, practices, and organizing processes that hypothesis-driven designs typically obscure.

This special issue invites qualitative research that examines entrepreneurship at the margins as a site for theory-building. The focus encompasses marginalized entrepreneurs across gender, race, migration, disability, age, and Indigenous contexts, particularly in Global South settings where research access challenges are compounded by institutional barriers and epistemic dominance of Global North perspectives.

Contributions should treat marginality as an analytical lens rather than merely a research setting, bringing together reflexive scholarship that advances cumulative qualitative understanding of entrepreneurship as organizing while exploring core themes of power, inequality, agency, legitimacy, and meaning-making.

Lifestyle entrepreneurship represents a growing but fragmented research area that extends beyond traditional profit-maximization approaches to encompass quality of life, personal fulfillment, and work-life balance. These entrepreneurs prioritize autonomy and alignment with personal values while establishing ventures often in tourism, hospitality, crafts, and creative sectors, frequently in rural or low-density areas where they contribute to local economic development and cultural preservation.

Despite increasing recognition of its significance, existing research lacks an integrated perspective examining both entrepreneur characteristics and their operational ecosystems. Lifestyle entrepreneurs face persistent challenges including financial instability, seasonal market dependence, and insufficient institutional support, while contextual factors such as social networks, public policies, and cultural influences significantly shape their business structures and community interactions.

This special issue examines how emotions influence entrepreneurial judgment and decision-making, particularly in community-based and localized ecosystems. While existing research has focused on positive emotions like passion and resilience, the issue seeks to explore understudied emotional domains such as despair, awe, humility, guilt, empathy, and regret that shape entrepreneurs' strategic choices, resilience, and ethical judgments.

The special issue welcomes interdisciplinary research on how diverse emotional experiences affect entrepreneurial cognition and behavior within small businesses, family firms, and social enterprises. It invites both quantitative approaches examining causal relationships and qualitative studies exploring contextualized experiences, alongside theoretical contributions offering new frameworks for understanding emotions in entrepreneurship.

Insights from this research aim to inform policy-making, entrepreneurial education, and support structures by revealing how emotional dynamics drive sustainable business practices, ethical decision-making, and community engagement in localized entrepreneurial ecosystems.

This special issue challenges the predominant narrative in scholarship on women entrepreneurs facing crises, which typically emphasizes their vulnerabilities and capacity to endure hardship. Instead, the call invites research that positions women entrepreneurs as active agents driving meaningful change across individual, familial, community, regional, national, and global levels.

The special issue seeks contributions examining both the positive and negative dimensions of entrepreneurship during crises, spanning the crisis period itself as well as pre- and post-crisis contexts.
This special issue seeks manuscripts advancing our understanding of time in entrepreneurship. Research on the duration, pace, timing, and speed of action calibration in entrepreneurial processes such as opportunity realization are key examples of the role temporal dynamics play in entrepreneurship. Time is equally critical when examining decisions about the timing of growth while managing external events and shocks alongside slowly or rapidly evolving industry trends and customer preferences. Further lines of inquiry concern the pace, timing, and speed of exit decisions, or decisions to pursue venturing activities over time. Entrepreneurs' subjective perceptions of time, and their own and their stakeholders' orientations towards the short- vs. long-term, the past, present or future shape how they navigate entrepreneurship.

The startup workforce represents a distinct and consequential stakeholder in entrepreneurship that has been systematically understudied relative to founders and funders. Early insights from the Stanford Project on Emerging Companies revealed how organizational changes within startups disproportionately impacted long-tenured employees. This pioneering work laid the foundation for understanding how startups differ from established firms in their approach to human capital, including fundamental aspects such as compensation, staffing, and performance management.

Contemporary research has deepened our understanding of the unique dynamics between startups and their employees. Whereas early research identified demographic patterns, illustrating that startup employees tend to be younger and risk-tolerant, recent work has uncovered more nuanced dynamics. For example, experienced employees often join startups when they have partners with stable careers, but can also command wage premiums as firms grow. Startup employees are drawn in by passionate founders, opportunities for greater freedom and responsibility, and the potential for significant financial upside.

This special issue examines how firms of different sizes and stages organize themselves to achieve exceptional performance amid rapid technological change, globalization, and ecosystem interdependencies. The collection seeks theoretical and empirical research on novel organizational forms, structures, and governance models that enable firms to outperform competitors, innovate, and scale effectively. Particular emphasis is given to understanding organizational innovations in hidden champions, niche leaders, scaleups, and other exceptional performers.

The issue welcomes research investigating how novel organizational forms emerge and function across diverse geographical and economic contexts, including high-cost developed economies, emerging economies, and developing regions. Special attention is paid to underrepresented areas beyond OECD countries, recognizing that many Asian economies have cultivated distinctive organizational models through national initiatives. Research should address how factors like leadership, internal collaboration structures, technology adoption, ecosystem relationships, and policy environments shape organizational choices and performance outcomes.

This special issue examines the ethical foundations of entrepreneurship, positioning ethics as central to entrepreneurial practice rather than a constraint on it. The issue brings together entrepreneurship studies and philosophical ethics to explore how venture creation, opportunity recognition, and stakeholder engagement involve fundamental questions about responsibility, justice, and human flourishing. It investigates the tension between entrepreneurship's capacity for creativity and disruption and concerns about commodification and self-optimization.

The special issue welcomes diverse methodological and disciplinary perspectives examining how philosophical traditions such as virtue ethics, phenomenology, pragmatism, and deontology illuminate entrepreneurial practice. It particularly emphasizes entrepreneurial decision-making under uncertainty and fluidity, where ethical judgment must balance competing stakeholder interests without reliance on established protocols. The issue seeks papers exploring how entrepreneurship and ethics can deepen each other's understanding through examining contingency, creativity, authenticity, care, and emerging futures.

Nearly half of early-stage entrepreneurs globally are raising children, yet the intersection of parenthood and entrepreneurship remains underexplored in research. Parent-entrepreneurs face unique tensions between childcare demands and business pressures at individual, family, and societal levels, while entrepreneurship often intensifies rather than resolves work-family conflict. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for developing effective support systems and policy frameworks that recognize the dual roles many founders navigate.

The special issue seeks both explanatory and interpretive research examining how parenthood shapes and is shaped by entrepreneurial activity across diverse family forms, parental roles, and regional contexts. Key areas include motherhood and entrepreneurship (beyond work-family balance), underexplored topics such as fatherhood, single parenthood, and LGBTQ+ parenting, household dynamics between partners and across generations, and how institutional frameworks and welfare policies influence parent-entrepreneurs differently across regions.

This special collection examines Chinese family businesses navigating intergenerational succession as they approach the 50-year anniversary of China's economic reforms. The collection addresses how family firms balance continuity with renewal as founders transfer leadership to successors, focusing particularly on socioemotional wealth—the noneconomic priorities that family firms pursue, such as preserving family control, maintaining family identity, and ensuring transgenerational continuity.

Chinese family firms provide a distinctive context for advancing family business theory. Unlike Western family enterprises that evolved within stable institutional environments, contemporary Chinese firms emerged after market reforms and now experience large-scale waves of succession amid shifts in economic institutions, governance expectations, and societal values. Successors assume leadership while navigating the coexistence of traditional Confucian principles emphasizing family continuity with modern market logics, professional management practices, and global stakeholder expectations.
