This special issue examines how algorithmic systems shape markets, organizations, and consumer behavior beyond their technical applications. The focus extends to understanding how these systems influence competition, value distribution, market access, consumer decision-making, and broader societal outcomes including fairness, inclusion, and sustainability.

The call invites research across three interconnected domains: markets, consumers, and organizations. A key emphasis is balancing economic performance with social value creation, addressing algorithmic bias, pricing practices, and inequalities while identifying conditions under which algorithmic integration benefits society.

The special issue prioritizes practical research bridging marketing theory with real-world algorithmic system design and governance. Studies using diverse methodologies are welcomed, particularly those offering actionable insights for managers and policymakers.

This special issue addresses disability as a central dimension of contemporary markets and consumption. Building on recent scholarship including a previous JMM special issue on the disabling marketplace and the Cripped Marketing Manifesto, the collection seeks to move beyond foundational work on marketplace exclusion toward deeper investigations of embodied, temporal, and affective aspects of disabled market life. The issue invites contributions exploring what remains theoretically, methodologically, and practically unsaid about how disability reshapes our understanding of markets themselves.

This special issue seeks to establish literature as a valuable resource for marketing and consumer research. While marketing scholars have long studied stories and narratives, literary texts and literary theory remain underutilized in the field. The editors invite researchers to explore how novels, poetry, drama, and other literary forms can deepen our understanding of consumer behavior, brands, and markets in ways that complement traditional empirical approaches.

The issue welcomes three main types of contributions: studies using literary texts as empirical material to examine consumer culture; scholarship applying literary theory concepts to marketing phenomena; and reflections on literary methods and epistemologies in consumer research. Additionally, the editors invite work on how literature itself is marketed and consumed, including phenomena like BookTok, and submissions that experiment with literary and creative writing forms as modes of scholarly contribution when integral to the research.

Marketing practice is being transformed by technological advances, geopolitical shifts, economic pressures, and growing demands for sustainability and social responsibility. Retail environments serve as key sites where these transformations unfold, with both physical and digital channels becoming laboratories for new consumer engagement and adaptive strategies. Consumers now demand greater brand ethics, transparency, and societal contributions, while external disruptions like supply chain fragility, inflation, and geopolitical tensions reshape pricing and sourcing. Simultaneously, artificial intelligence and platform ecosystems are fundamentally changing how consumers access information and make purchase decisions.

This special issue focuses on the emerging intersection of artificial intelligence and sustainable marketing. AI technologies like machine learning and predictive analytics are rapidly transforming marketing practices, while sustainability challenges demand new approaches to shift consumption patterns and market systems. The special issue seeks research examining how AI-driven marketing influences sustainability outcomes at individual, organizational, and system-wide levels.

The integration of AI in marketing presents both opportunities and challenges for sustainability. AI tools can enable personalized sustainability nudges, improve resource efficiency, and support circular economy initiatives. However, concerns include algorithmic bias, privacy issues, transparency challenges, and the risk of reinforcing unsustainable consumption through hyper-personalized marketing. Understanding these dynamics is critical to ensure AI contributes positively to sustainable futures rather than exacerbating environmental and social challenges.

The rapidly evolving landscape of home robotics presents new opportunities for advertising and marketing. With advances in physical AI making robots more capable of interacting in everyday environments, and demographic shifts creating increased demand for in-home robotics, major technology companies are now commercializing robots for caregiving and other household functions. These robots offer a novel channel for brand engagement, as human-robot interactions can foster emotional connections that position robots as both companions and marketing agents.

This special issue seeks high-quality research examining the intersection of robotics, marketing, and advertising. The journal invites contributions exploring how consumers engage with robotic agents, how these interactions affect brand perception and consumer behavior, and how marketing strategies can effectively leverage robotic technologies. Research employing diverse methodologies and addressing topics ranging from human-robot interaction psychology to ethical and privacy considerations is welcome.

Marketing has evolved beyond economic value creation to encompass broader social impacts, particularly as digital technologies like artificial intelligence and big data become deeply embedded in society. These advancements enable marketing strategies that influence not only consumer behavior but also societal values and well-being, raising critical questions about ethical implications and power dynamics that remain underexplored in academic literature.

This special issue invites research examining how strategic marketing enabled by technology reshapes society and the accompanying ethical and power concerns. The editors seek both theoretical and empirical contributions that illuminate the relationship between marketing strategies and society, with particular emphasis on ethical issues, power imbalances, and societal consequences of marketing in digital environments.

Brand activism has evolved into a mainstream corporate practice where companies and executives publicly engage with controversial socio-political issues. While existing literature has explored authenticity, ideology, and corporate strategies in brand activism, there remains a significant gap regarding its broader social and transformative impacts. The phenomenon has expanded across diverse contexts including non-profits, universities, CEOs, and consumers, and is studied in B2B markets, the luxury sector, and globally.

Recent developments suggest that brand activism is undergoing significant transformation. Since late 2024, many major corporations have withdrawn from diversity and inclusion commitments, scaled back activist visibility on social media, and reduced socio-political content. This shift, driven by rising populism, geopolitical conflicts, and societal polarisation, highlights a critical disconnect between existing theoretical frameworks and evolving real-world practices that scholars struggle to capture adequately.

Changes in Brand Activism Strategies – Is brand activism taking a new form? Are we witnessing the rise of less visible, more strategic, or quieter modes of activism? How do activist brands act in the current landscape?

Emerging Brand Activist Contexts – How, and to what extent, does brand activism manifest across different political, cultural, and geographical contexts? Particular attention is invited to the Global South and emerging markets, where civil liberties, media pluralism, or legal protections for civil rights may be limited or contested.

Institutional Actors as Activist Agents – What happens when universities, public institutions, public figures, or cultural organisations engage in activist practices? How do these actors influence public discourse, shape political debate, or redefine the boundaries of market responsibility?

The Transformative Effect of Brand Activism – Can marketing-driven activism lead to lasting social change, or is it ultimately limited to symbolic gestures and market-oriented performance goals?

International and Transnational Dimensions of Activism – How does activism unfold across national borders, global supply chains, and international institutions? What new conditions arise when brand activism is framed as a systemic, transnational commitment?

Backlash, Culture War, and Polarisation – How brand activism is affected when social and institutional risks emerge, corporate activism provokes ideological resistance, public fatigue, or consumer boycotts? How has the context of rising populism affected the conditions for brand activism?

Consumer Activism and Spaces of Expression – Has consumer activism changed? If so, how do activist consumers influence brand strategies, communication, and positioning? How do new forms of digital and/or offline spaces affect how consumer activists express their demands, critiques, or support? Are there changes in the relationships between brands and consumer activists?

Authenticity and Consumer Activism - How can we critically differentiate between authentic brand activism and opportunistic appropriation of activist discourse? Have consumers' understandings of authentic brand activism changed amid current shifts in the sociocultural context?
