Despite decades of research on ethics and sustainability, supply chains continue to exhibit persistent unethical behaviour including forced labour, inadequate working conditions, and gaps between corporate commitments and actual practices. Rather than treating unethical conduct as a compliance problem to be solved through better auditing and codes, this special issue seeks to understand the structural and systemic conditions that make unethical decisions rational and routine within supply chains.

The special issue addresses contemporary challenges including new regulatory requirements such as the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive, rapid adoption of artificial intelligence in procurement and logistics, geopolitical fragmentation reshaping global sourcing, and organisational environments where ethical choices are often more costly than unethical alternatives. The collection brings together scholars from operations management, business ethics, technology management, and organisation theory to examine the causal mechanisms underlying persistent unethical behaviour.

Retail environments serve as key sites where these transformations unfold, with both physical and digital channels becoming laboratories for new consumer engagement and adaptive strategies. Consumers now demand greater brand ethics, transparency, and societal contributions, while external disruptions like supply chain fragility, inflation, and geopolitical tensions reshape pricing and sourcing.
Green HRM (GHRM) integrates environmental responsibility into HR practices and procedures, enabling organizations to achieve sustainability goals while transforming employees into sustainability advocates. However, most GHRM research originates from the Global North, leaving implementation in the Global South—Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East—insufficiently studied and scattered across specific contexts.

This gap in scholarship risks producing GHRM frameworks disconnected from the socioeconomic and institutional realities of Global South countries. The special issue seeks to address this by inviting conceptual papers, empirical research, and scholarly discussions that examine how GHRM can advance sustainability, social justice, and economic stability in resource-constrained environments while exploring the unique obstacles and opportunities for GHRM adoption in Global South organizations.

This special issue addresses how Product Lifecycle Management systems must evolve to support Industry 5.0's three foundational principles: human-centricity, sustainability, and resilience. Traditional PLM systems, designed primarily for data integration and process efficiency, lack mechanisms to support operator well-being, embed circular economy strategies, ensure regulatory compliance, or enable rapid adaptation during disruptions.

The special issue introduces PLM 5.0 as a strategic governance platform that integrates lifecycle data, human interaction, sustainability metrics, and adaptive decision-making across industrial ecosystems. It seeks conceptual, empirical, methodological, and case-based contributions that explore how PLM systems should be redesigned, how organizations can integrate circular economy principles, what governance frameworks are needed, and how manufacturing can build resilience through lifecycle management.

Digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and sustainability pressures are reshaping how entrepreneurs access capital and how value is created and financed. These changes have created new financing mechanisms while raising questions about equity and access to funding for small businesses and startups, particularly regarding collateral, legitimacy, and institutional visibility.

The special issue addresses emerging financing channels such as crowdfunding, peer-to-peer lending, and tokenized assets, while emphasizing that financial decisions are influenced by behavioral, social, institutional, and sustainability factors beyond technical considerations. Artificial intelligence is a key focus, as it transforms credit evaluation, investment screening, and venture creation, affecting SMEs' access to finance and requiring interdisciplinary approaches.

This special issue examines how tensions and paradoxes emerge, interact, and evolve across project environments at multiple levels—individual, team, organizational, and interorganizational. Rather than viewing tensions as problems to eliminate, the issue encourages research that explores how project actors and leaders can navigate, leverage, and productively work with persistent, interdependent contradictory demands that are inherent in complex project work.

The call invites theory-informed contributions that move beyond binary either/or framings to adopt both/and and more-than approaches for understanding tensions. Topics of particular interest include tensions in project learning, sustainability integration, stakeholder management, and the emerging role of algorithmic technologies in project decision-making. The special issue welcomes conceptual, qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method research, with emphasis on longitudinal and comparative designs that capture how tensions evolve over time.

Projects increasingly serve as platforms for translating sustainability goals into concrete actions, yet the relationship between stakeholder engagement and sustainability outcomes is complex and multifaceted. This special issue examines how projects and programs generate, mediate, and shape sustainability outcomes and legacies through stakeholder engagement across their entire lifecycle, extending beyond traditional project success metrics to encompass long-term societal and environmental impacts.

The special issue identifies five central tensions: the paradox of inclusion and exclusion in stakeholder participation; the mismatch between global sustainability ambitions and local contextual realities; conflicts between project temporal constraints and extended sustainability time horizons; tensions between managerial control approaches and emergent sustainability dynamics; and the reconfiguring influence of artificial intelligence on stakeholder engagement processes. These tensions reflect competing demands and values that cannot be fully resolved simultaneously but require careful conceptual and empirical examination.

This special issue focuses on the emerging intersection of artificial intelligence and sustainable marketing. AI technologies like machine learning and predictive analytics are rapidly transforming marketing practices, while sustainability challenges demand new approaches to shift consumption patterns and market systems. The special issue seeks research examining how AI-driven marketing influences sustainability outcomes at individual, organizational, and system-wide levels.

The integration of AI in marketing presents both opportunities and challenges for sustainability. AI tools can enable personalized sustainability nudges, improve resource efficiency, and support circular economy initiatives. However, concerns include algorithmic bias, privacy issues, transparency challenges, and the risk of reinforcing unsustainable consumption through hyper-personalized marketing. Understanding these dynamics is critical to ensure AI contributes positively to sustainable futures rather than exacerbating environmental and social challenges.

This special issue seeks high-quality research on Decision Support Systems (DSS) that address sustainable and resilient transitions across organisations, societies, and supply chains. In environments characterised by technological disruption, environmental threats, and changing workforce demands, DSS models, frameworks, tools, and applications are essential for enabling evidence-based decision-making and strategic adaptation.

The call welcomes contributions exploring both theoretical foundations and practical applications of DSS across four main areas: green and sustainable transitions, digital transformation, workforce and skills transitions, and resilient supply chains. Submissions should demonstrate how DSS support organisations and societies in balancing efficiency with sustainability and resilience objectives while navigating rapid change.

Relevant submissions include conceptual models, quantitative frameworks with performance indicators, empirical case studies, interdisciplinary approaches, and critical analyses of adoption barriers and governance considerations for DSS implementation in transitions.

This special issue examines how strategic marketing can advance regenerative futures. While sustainability remains important, regenerative approaches go beyond harm reduction and efficiency to actively restore social, ecological, and economic systems through business strategies, partnerships, and market practices. The issue seeks to understand how firms formulate regenerative marketing goals, develop and communicate regenerative strategies, and align commercial objectives with societal and ecological renewal.

The call invites both conceptual and empirical research exploring marketing's role in enabling restoration, renewal, resilience, and long-term stakeholder value creation. Diverse methodologies are welcome, including experiments, surveys, qualitative research, mixed methods, and multi-level or cross-cultural approaches. Papers should address strategic marketing capabilities, brand strategy, consumer behaviour, digital marketing, business models, stakeholder collaboration, and evaluation metrics related to regenerative transformation.

This special issue explores how accounting and accountability can support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 11 on sustainable cities and communities. While SDG 11 addresses urban sustainability broadly, existing implementation has been criticised for its top-down orientation, often overlooking the capacity of local communities to inform behaviour change, generate local knowledge, and create participatory spaces. The special issue seeks to understand how accounting and accountability mechanisms can mobilise local capacities to advance a just transition toward SDG 11 that prioritises community voices and participation.

This special issue examines how information systems scholarship can address environmental concerns related to generative AI. While GAI offers significant benefits for efficiency and automation, its rapid development has created substantial environmental challenges, including high electricity consumption, water use for cooling, and electronic waste from obsolete computing hardware. These impacts disproportionately affect vulnerable populations and regions in the Global South.

The issue seeks studies adopting an eco-socio-technical perspective to explore both the negative environmental effects of GAI and its potential benefits for weather forecasting, agriculture, and urban management. Contributors are encouraged to investigate how organizations, governments, individuals, and communities can implement and use GAI responsibly, examining tradeoffs between technological benefits and environmental costs. Research employing primary data, various methodologies, and practitioner perspectives are welcomed.

Responsible innovation seeks to align innovation with ethical considerations, societal values, and needs of current and future generations. However, it operates within significant tensions between innovation and regulation, economic incentives and ethical commitments, and short-term efficiency and long-term responsibility. These tensions have led to observable backlash across sectors, with organizations scaling back responsible innovation initiatives in response to political and societal shifts, seeking to restore previous operational states rather than simply resist change.

This special issue explores why responsible innovation provokes opposition, resistance, and counter-mobilization across individual, organizational, and societal levels. The issue recognizes that backlash need not be entirely detrimental—it may serve as corrective feedback revealing deeper tensions and pointing toward more integrative approaches. The call invites empirical research from multiple disciplines examining the catalysts, consequences, and contingencies of tensions in responsible innovation, including how organizations can develop strategies for strategic resilience and lasting social legitimacy.

The polycrisis—a convergence of overlapping crises including climate change, pandemic disruptions, geopolitical conflicts, and economic volatility—challenges management practice and theory. This special issue argues that sustainability rooted in environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and economic resilience is not a luxury but essential for organizational survival and legitimacy when facing systemic turbulence.

Organizations must maintain legitimacy and adapt strategy amid multiple simultaneous crises. This issue seeks scholarship examining how sustainable management approaches enable resilience, how supply chains can be redesigned for both sustainability and continuity, and what governance structures support long-term commitment during short-term crises. Contributions should draw on diverse theoretical perspectives—systems theory, institutional theory, ethics, and resilience science—to illuminate how sustainability principles guide decision-making under radical uncertainty.

Contemporary sustainability challenges increasingly foreground organizations as embedded within complex social-ecological systems rather than operating independently from them. While ecological degradation and resource constraints affect organizations worldwide, these challenges are more immediate and structurally embedded in the operating environments of the Global South. These challenges are not just a background context to which organizations must adapt but an outcome of long-standing patterns of extraction, uneven development, and entrenched social inequalities that continue to shape what sustainability can mean in practice.

We are entering an age of digital futures with artificial intelligence taking over more and more human tasks at rapid speed, as well as broken futures with accelerating dynamics of climate change, in which the survival of humankind will depend on our ability to organize in collective ways and imagine alternatives to tackle such complex social problems, amidst growing inequalities and ecological destruction on a planetary scale.

Scholarship on business sustainability increasingly views organizations as embedded within natural systems, conceptualized through the planetary boundaries framework. The planetary boundary framework defines nine Earth system processes that regulate the planet's stability and resilience and are directly affected by human activity. Alarmingly, seven of these nine boundaries have now been crossed, threatening both natural systems and the economies that depend on them. For business scholarship, this creates an urgent need to understand how organizations can operate and manage within the safe space delineated by planetary boundaries.

Capitalism remains the dominant framework for organising global economic life, yet its promises of prosperity and inclusion have increasingly come under scrutiny. Over the past few decades, the richest 1% have captured more than half of global wealth, while environmental degradation has accelerated at an alarming rate, threatening planetary boundaries. These outcomes have prompted growing calls for more inclusive and sustainable forms of capitalism, leading to the emergence of the concept of Inclusive Capitalism. Inclusive Capitalism seeks to reconcile profit-making with broader societal goals such as environmental stewardship, social justice and economic inclusion. However, its very emergence implies a failure of traditional neoliberal capitalism to deliver on its promises of inclusivity and prosperity. The push for Inclusive Capitalism thus reflects a growing recognition of capitalism's contradictions and the need to rethink how value is defined, measured and distributed.

The tourism sector faces profound sustainability challenges including climate crises, socioeconomic inequalities, and biodiversity loss. While green transitions and net-zero initiatives have gained prominence, they often remain focused on technical solutions rather than addressing the political dimensions of change. This special issue seeks work that critically examines who benefits from transitions, who bears the burdens, and whose voices are included in governance processes.

The special issue advances the concept of Just Sustainability Transition (JST) to move beyond narrow carbon and labour-focused agendas toward interrogating fundamental questions about power, equity, and historical context. It recognizes that sustainability transitions in tourism are embedded in structural inequalities and shaped by global power asymmetries. The issue welcomes theoretical, conceptual, and empirical contributions using intersectional, decolonial, ecological, feminist, Indigenous, and multispecies justice perspectives to illuminate tensions and transformative potentials in sectoral transitions.

This special issue examines how supply chains are being transformed by regulatory pressures and sustainability imperatives. The convergence of resource scarcity, climate urgency, and increasingly stringent European regulations—including CSRD, CSDDD, and the Digital Product Passport—requires companies to integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance into their supply chain strategies. However, this integration raises significant methodological and operational challenges around impact measurement, traceability, and inter-organizational coordination.

The call seeks contributions exploring the tensions and synergies between extra-financial performance requirements and supply chain management from academic, regulatory, and managerial perspectives. Recent regulatory uncertainty, including the proposed Omnibus simplification package, creates new research questions around regulatory path dependency, stranded costs, and the trade-offs between anticipatory compliance and operational greenwashing versus greenhushing strategies.

The luxury tourism sector is experiencing rapid growth, yet scholarship has largely concentrated on economic dimensions while neglecting sustainability, social, and ethical concerns. Despite increasing attention to the relationship between sustainability and luxury, fundamental questions remain about what sustainable luxury means given the inherent tension between exclusivity and responsible resource use, and whether consumers' sustainability concerns translate into actual purchasing decisions or involve meaningful trade-offs.

Current discourse overlooks local communities and workers, revealing gaps in understanding social inequality and how luxury tourism might support regenerative development. The sector often amplifies inequalities through exclusive enclaves that place burdens on local ecosystems and labor. Technological innovations like artificial intelligence and virtual reality further complicate this landscape by raising questions about authenticity, cultural representation, and access equity, while robust assessment methods for environmental and social impacts remain lacking.

The global food system is undergoing profound transformation driven by growing concerns about climate change, biodiversity loss, animal welfare, public health, and the long-term sustainability of livestock-based production models. Against this backdrop, alternative proteins, including cultured meat, plant-based meat analogues, insect-based products and novel dairy substitutes, have emerged as promising pathways for addressing environmental pressures while meeting evolving consumer expectations for ethical, healthy and sustainable diets. Although consumer research on these products has expanded rapidly, a comprehensive understanding of how alternative proteins reshape the broader agrifood system remains limited. Existing studies often address consumption, production, regulation, and socio-cultural dynamics in isolation, leaving significant knowledge gaps regarding value-chain restructuring, producer adoption, economic feasibility, and governance.

Environmental degradation has become an urgent global concern, with emerging and developing economies facing a particularly complex set of challenges. While many of these countries are rapidly industrializing and increasingly integrated into global value chains, they often lack the regulatory infrastructures, institutional capacity, and enforcement mechanisms necessary to ensure environmentally responsible economic activity. These so-called environmental institutional voids amplify the negative externalities of business operations, threatening both ecological integrity and long-term development prospects.

This special issue aims to advance scholarly knowledge on how multinational enterprises (MNEs) form international partnerships to create social value. Research in multinational business scholarship has examined the international activities of MNEs in addressing the broader sustainability agenda. However, there remains limited understanding of the specific challenges, tensions, and opportunities MNEs face when engaging in multi-stakeholder international partnerships for social value creation. Given the increasing centrality of such partnerships in global sustainability efforts, addressing this gap is both timely and important. The motivation for this special issue is to advance new theoretical and empirical knowledge into how MNEs' international partnerships enable social value creation.

Achieving net-zero targets poses significant challenges for economies, governments, and societies worldwide. Multinational enterprises (MNEs) are central actors in this transition, both as developers and adopters of renewable energy and low-carbon technologies. As primary boundary spanners, they manage global value chains and partnerships across diverse institutional contexts and consumer markets. MNEs increasingly navigate a complex landscape of incentives, sanctions, and regulatory barriers that vary by sector, technology platform, country, and region. Politically motivated disruptions—including shifting tariff and non-tariff barriers and uneven low-carbon policies—compound these challenges, placing premium value on managerial capabilities.

Two emerging developments motivate this Special Issue. First, digital technologies offer new potential to enhance firm-level capabilities for coordinating and adapting cross-border networks, while reshaping competitive dynamics between incumbents, startups, and scale-ups. Second, China's ascendancy as both innovator and regulator—particularly in new energy technologies—and its growing geopolitical influence demand renewed scholarly attention.

The value of management accounting lies in its ability to serve managers in different roles in their decision making and broader managerial work, all situated in their operational environment. The nature of managerial work and the potential support from MA therein are being challenged by several intertwined contemporary developments: a) technology advancements, such as algorithms and the artificial intelligence (AI) penetration to many professions, MA included, b) human judgement, ethical considerations and responsible behaviour, and c) global and local issues that influence the business context, such as geopolitics and climate change.

Many unprecedented developments over the past few years, such as geopolitical shocks, social upheavals, uncertainty over new technologies like AI, recurring natural disasters, and sustained uncertainty about climate change, have forced a rethink of a sustainable future. While parameters of change and transformations are themselves undergoing drastic changes in ways that were never expected, day-to-day survival strategies take precedence. As a result, there is growing concern about whether societies, organisations, communities and individuals can continue with the existing notions of a sustainable future.

New debates and discourses have kindled the need for reimagining ideas and perspectives of a sustainable future world. These discussions span a large domain of ideas, including organisational strategy formulation, stakeholder management, supply chain reconfiguration, organisational development, etc. Emerging literature signposts tough decisions, organisational anxieties, change management barriers, and possible solutions as organisations confront difficult and unprecedented organisational transformations.

Social marketing has long been positioned as a discipline capable of improving societal wellbeing by applying marketing principles to influence behaviour in socially beneficial ways. Early contributions that imagined marketing being used beyond the commercial realm laid the foundation for the field's formal emergence in the early 1970s. Over the decades, social marketing has advanced its understanding of how to encourage and sustain behaviour change, yet the contemporary landscape presents challenges of a fundamentally different scale.

Increasing environmental degradation, climate instability, resource pressures, and persistent social inequities highlight the need for social marketing approaches capable of addressing system-wide issues. While behaviour remains a central concern, scholars have argued that meaningful progress requires attention to macro-level structures and the dynamic interactions among actors, networks, institutions, and infrastructures. Social marketing is therefore being called upon not merely to promote individual behaviour change, but to support the creation of sustainable futures through coordinated, multi-level forms of change.
