This special issue examines how knowledge and technology transfer operate differently across diverse organizational forms, moving beyond the assumption that transfer follows a single institutional model. The call brings together fragmented literature on intellectual property, open innovation, family businesses, and cooperative structures to develop an integrated framework for understanding ownership's role in shaping what knowledge is transferred, retained, or commercialized.

The framework organizes ownership forms along three dimensions: access (who obtains knowledge and on what terms), appropriation (who captures economic returns), and governance (who decides how knowledge is used and protected). These dimensions help explain why knowledge flows differently through universities, private firms, state-owned enterprises, cooperatives, and other organizational structures.

Potential topics

Locating and transitioning ownership forms: how family firms, employee-owned firms, SOEs, cooperatives, and platform cooperatives differ in what they transfer and to whom, and how transfer changes as firms professionalize, corporatize, or adopt foundation governance.

Hybrid and intermediate arrangements: dual-class structures, stakeholder boards, patent pools, and benefit-corporation statutes, and when such hybrids are stable.

University and public research transfer: how technology transfer offices, consortia, and open science initiatives allocate rights, and how policy reforms shift those allocations.

AI, data, and platforms: how the three dimensions operate where the asset itself blurs conventional boundaries between use, capture, and control.

Rights-based theory, measurement, and policy: work that formalizes the framework, specifies trade-offs, or informs organizational and policy design.

Technology transfer from universities and industry has been central to economic development, but rapidly advancing research and technology demand continuous evolution of university transfer structures and processes. While established frameworks have driven economic impact, emerging disruptions including AI advancement, geopolitical shifts, and intellectual property challenges are testing the resilience of current systems. This special issue examines how technology transfer systems can effectively balance economic impact with social value creation.

The issue invites exploration across multiple levels: macro-level policy frameworks and government R&D investments, meso-level institutional configurations and TTO designs, and micro-level academic entrepreneur behaviours and professional competencies. It particularly addresses how universities can simultaneously pursue economic commercialisation while meeting expectations to address societal grand challenges, and how these dual objectives create tensions requiring new business models and support structures.

This special collection seeks research on technology transfer and innovation that emerges from collaborations between academic researchers and practitioners, policymakers, or other non-academic stakeholders. The collection particularly welcomes papers co-authored by academics working alongside technology transfer professionals, innovators, investors, and other industry experts, as such partnerships offer unique access to emerging phenomena and practical contexts.

The collection aims to publish rigorous, peer-reviewed scholarship that leverages collaborative engagement to develop new theories, access distinctive data, and address important questions in technology transfer while maintaining the journal's standards for methodological rigor and empirical credibility. Papers should demonstrate how boundary-spanning collaboration contributes novel, impactful insights relevant to both scholarship and practice.

Universities are increasingly expected to act as entrepreneurial institutions that create value beyond teaching and research through entrepreneurship education, knowledge exchange, technology transfer, academic spin-offs, and wider ecosystem engagement. However, the mechanisms through which these activities generate economic and societal value remain insufficiently understood, particularly across the full pathway from capability formation to third-mission and regional impact. Existing research often examines entrepreneurship education, academic entrepreneurship, university-industry-society collaboration, and ecosystem development in relative isolation, while practice still relies heavily on narrow indicators such as patents, licences, spin-off counts, or commercialisation income.
